Shane and I are talking about going away for the weekend, and I spent some time tonight trying to figure out the closest destination where we could go see the ocean. I suspect we’ll settle for Chesapeake Bay and go to Annapolis, but we’re definitely thinking about a sweet weekend away in Chincoteague in the spring. We’ll be staying here if I have anything to say about it.
Looking at bed and breakfasts online, though, led to the following conversation:
me: When we’re retired and living a life of leisure on our librarian earnings, can we open a bed and breakfast that doesn’t suck?
SB: Definitely.
me: You know, one that isn’t all foofy and stuff?

Yay for non-foofy B&Bs! I can’t stand cutesy country decor.

non-foofy. the problem is the people that own/run the bb’s are, ehem, olderish. They come from a time when that foofy stuff was high class quality glam. That’s my assumption. Perhaps there is some secret society of bb toughs that monitor bb decor and enforce some sort of code.

Chincoteague (and Assateague) are beautiful. The ponies and deer are cute, but the mosquitoes are a force to be reckoned with. I don’t think I’ve ever known more voracious mosquitoes … so be on your guard.
Another beautiful spot you may want to consider for a weekend is Oxford. Oxford is on the east side of the Bay, and filled with b&bs and other lovely small town sites. If you go to Oxford, take the ferry and bring your bikes … that’s how I remember getting around. It’s also a great place for crabbing.
Ahhh … I’m starting to miss it again. I can’t wait to make another trip out to Maryland and DC. It has been too long.

I’ve never stayed in Chincoteague, but have plenty of experience with Dewey Beach, DE, Ocean City, MD, and Rehoboth, DE. But I have also heard from others that the mosquitoes are horrendous there.
